Position Summary:

The Senior Services Worker will be responsible for providing settlement assistance to eligible newcomer seniors settling in the Niagara region. S/He will encourage, support and empower newcomer seniors to meet immediate needs, build community connections, and participate in their new society. In addition, this role with conduct outreach activities that will engage newcomer seniors and will build relationships with program participants, work with community connections staff and volunteers to develop programs and engage in outreach and promotion for a wide range of programs at the Centre.

Responsibilities:

The Senior Services Worker will,

  • Assist eligible senior clients arriving to our community and in need of social connections, informal language practice and community engagement
  • Supporting the outreach effort for newcomer seniors
  • Coordinate regular group activities for newcomer seniors
  • Develop promotional and outreach materials, as necessary for the seniors programs and a wide range of programs offered at the Centre by the Community Connections Department
  • Follow up with seniors program participants
  • Build relationships with program participants
  • Work collaboratively with volunteers and staff to ensure efficient and effective management of Niagara Folk Arts Multicultural Centre events and activities
  • May occasionally be required to perform duties not set forth in the job description

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education on social/community work or related field
  • Employment or volunteer experience in community agency serving newcomers
  • Employment or volunteer experience in program outreach
  • Understanding of community resources and social services available in St. Catharines for newcomers and newcomer seniors
  • Empathic skills and understanding of the newcomer experience, especially in the case of isolated seniors whose language skills are limited
  • Ability to function in a multidisciplinary, culturally diverse workplace
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in a second language is a strong asset
  • Proficiency on most commonly used computer applications
  • Ability to work with a relational database system (e.g. Microsoft Access) critical
  • Familiarity with professional office systems and procedures.

This is a part-time position
Hours: 15 hours per week
Expected start date is September 05, 2017
