Summary:

OCASI is looking for Summer Students to fill a variety of positions at OCASI.

NOTE:  The positions are open to full-time students aged 15-30 years who are intending to return to their studies in 2017; are legally entitled to work in Canada and must be either a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred.

Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants - OCASI acts as a collective voice for immigrant and refugee-serving organizations and coordinates response to shared needs and concerns. OCASI is a registered charity governed by a volunteer board of directors.  OCASI’s membership is comprised of 220 community-based organizations in Ontario.  Typical activities include providing professional training to enhance skills of practitioners, working with communities, government and policy decision makers to enhance the economic, social and cultural contributions of immigrants and refugees and supporting community-based research. The summer student positions are an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in careers such as Finance, Business, IT Support/Web development or Program development in the not-for profit sector, especially those interested in the immigration and refugee sector.

Website Content Development

Responsibilities:

Assist in the content renewal of our popular websites for newcomers to Ontario (Settlement.Org, NewYouth.ca); specifically:

  • Edit/create articles for publishing on Settlement.Org and NewYouth.ca
  • Work with partners to identify content for posting
  • Review and update broken links
  • Research Discussion Forum answers
  • Update related social media
  • Find/post news/events

Qualifications:

  • Strong writing skills with the ability to write in plain language
  • Excellent research techniques
  • Skills in HTML are an asset
  • Experience in video production is an asset
  • Fluency in French is a definite asset

Policy/Research and Membership Services

Responsibilities:

Assist in the logistical and administrative support of the Policy, Research & Membership Team; specifically:

  • Provide administrative and communication support to the annual membership renewal and related membership relations activities
  • Update contact database for member agencies and prospective members
  • Provide support in research activities and assist with data entry
  • Other administrative tasks including providing logistics support for events

Qualifications:

  • Strong writing skills with the ability to write in plain language
  • Excellent research techniques

Program & Projects

(Multiple positions)

Responsibilities:

Assist in:

  • Creating a database of resources with respect to services available for Mental Health, Violence Against Women and newcomers across Ontario, and for persons with in/visible disabilities
  • Research and catalog such services
  • Help organize events
  • Assist in the dessemination of outreach material

Qualifications:

  • Strong feminist, with awareness and support towards anti-racism and anti-oppression
  • Strong research techniques especially using the internet
  • Demonstrated ability in performing administrative and clerical tasks
  • Bilingual preferred

Finance & Administration

Responsibilities:

  • Review internal financial database (repository for all vendor/staff payments and expense codes) to ensure relevancy
  • Assisting the Senior Coordinator, Finance & Administration in finalizing cheque requisitions & updating the fiscal database with requisitions that are processed by the external Accountant
  • Coordinating the transmittal/return of the bi-weekly financial package; and
  • Ensuring the transmittal of vendor cheques after due internal processes.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum completion of secondary education with at least two years of Experience either within accounting or administration work in an office environment or university education or combination of thereof;
  • Good administrative, organizational skills and multi-tasking abilities
  • High level of attention to detail, accuracy and problem-solving skills

General Requirements for all Positions:

  • Candidates are expected to:
  • Have well-developed interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, partners, staff and volunteers
  • Have the ability to plan, organize and prioritize work activities; possess initiative and good judgment; work with little supervision and enjoy working as a team member in a fast paced environment
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to other cultures and ability to outreach to newcomer communities
  • The student will have a commitment to and awareness of equity, access to service issues, anti-racism and anti-oppression as it relates to immigrants and refugees
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Duration: From May 2017 to Aug 2017
Hours: 35 hours per week (generally full-time) covering approved weeks
Compensation: $15.00 per hour
