Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Site Leader or Youth Coordinator, Camp Counsellors will assist in the operation and delivery of a comprehensive camp experience as developed by Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre to meet the needs of participants and to ensure adequate safety while facilitating leisure activities.

Reports to: Camp Site Leader

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement educational and fun activities to increase interaction and positive relations among children from diverse cultures
  • To plan and implement a comprehensive, inclusive camp program to meet the needs of all participants
  • To provide instruction to campers and ensure planning and preparation for all activities related to the camp program are carried out successfully
  • To ensure supervision of campers at all times and provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants by adhering to program safety standards and assisting with emergency procedures as required
  • To provide quality customer service and act as a knowledgeable resource to parents, participants, volunteers, and leaders
  • To effectively and in a timely manner inform the Program Supervisor/Designate/Board of Education staff with regards to all aspects related to facilities, staffing, participant behavior, equipment, supplies, or anything that would impact the quality and safe delivery of day-to-day operations of the camp
  • To conduct safety checks of program equipment and allocated facilities daily. Clean up and store equipment properly at the end of the day
  • Other duties as required

Qualifications:

  • Excellent written and verbal English skills
  • Working toward a Secondary School Diploma
  • A valid Emergency First Aid/CPR “B” certification is an asset
  • Previous experience working with children is an asset
  • Employment offer is conditional upon receipt of a Criminal Records Search - Vulnerable Sector Screening that is acceptable to Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre
  • Must be a minimum 16 years of age or older by March 1, 2017
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent leadership skills and commitment to teamwork
  • Sensitivity and comfort in working with newcomers to Canada
  • Second language is an asset, especially Arabic

Work hours: 37.5 hours/week (duration: 1 week + 1 day of training prior to the start of the program)
Rate of pay: $12/ hour
