Position Summary:

Childcare Worker with our Short- Term CNC program (Care for Newcomer Children) position requires the ability for individuals to work well within a team environment and to have knowledge and experience working with children aged 19 months up to 6 years and school-age children aged 6-12 years.

Main Responsibilities:

Activities Development and Implementation

  • Implement and (where needed) develop child-care programs that support and promote the physical, cognitive, emotional and social development of children ages 19 months- 6 years old.
  • Lead activities by telling or reading stories, teaching songs and taking children to local points of interest, provide opportunities to express creativity through the media of art, dramatic play, music and physical activity
  • Guide and assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing and toilet habits
  • Observe children for signs of potential learning or behavioural problems and prepare reports for parents, guardians or supervisor.
  • Establish guidelines for behaviour, assess the abilities, interests and needs of children and discuss progress or problems with parents and other staff members
  • Plan and maintain an environment that protects the health, security and well-being of children
  • Assists with promoting the program in the community and conducting outreach.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships and liaisons with partner organizations, and other organizations serving children and their parents/caregivers
  • Connects program participants to other services at NYCH as appropriate.
  • Identifies appropriate resources for newcomers
  • Provides information about the program to supervisor as required.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintains required program records and reports
  • Attends NYCH and team meetings, trainings and events
  • Prepares accident and incident reports
  • Communicates with parents about their children, provides orientation to new participants
  • Provides updates to the Manager of Language Program
  • Manages and supervises volunteers

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • College Diploma or University Degree in Early Childhood Education, and certified and registered through the College of Early Childhood Educators (RECE)

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum of one year of working with children 19 months to 12 years of age
  • Demonstrated knowledge of issues affecting child development
  • Experience working with parents and children from diverse cultures
  • Experience supervising staff and volunteers
  • Ability to assist participants with a range of English language skills
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision
  • Flexible and adaptable work style
  • Good problem solving/conflict resolution skills
  • Excellent ability to manage stressful situations appropriately
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills in English; other language skills an asset

  • A successful clearance of criminal record verification will be required when necessary for the
