Summary:

Program Overview – English Language Services, Community Programs

Newcomer Programs & Services has served newcomers and refugees in Toronto for over four decades. Its mandate is to help newcomers and refugees settle, adjust, and integrate into society. Funded by the three levels of government, WoodGreen Newcomer Programs & Services operates English language training programs, settlement services, employment support programs, mentorship, networking activities, and social and recreational activities. Newcomer Programs & Services is committed to providing friendly and professional services to all newcomers to help them connect with Canadian society and their new way of life.

Responsibilities:

  • Delivers instruction to English language learners in accordance with Canadian Language Benchmarks, specific program curriculum, and other guidelines of funders and WoodGreen
  • Develops appropriate lesson plans, teaching methodologies, materials, and activities based on the experiences, social contexts, and life goals of learners
  • In consultation with the Manager, arranges for guest speakers, field trips, and other computerized/on-line learning activities to facilitate learning of learners
  • Starts classes on time and adheres to scheduled breaks and dismissal time
  • Evaluates progress of learners and promotes them to the next level when required
  • Monitors learners’ attendance and follows up with learners who are absent or are at risk of dropping out and informs Manager if attendance drops
  • Supports WoodGreen’s learner recruitment efforts through providing input, encouraging referrals from existing learners, and supporting recruitment activities
  • Monitors the settlement needs of learners and links them to other WoodGreen services
  • Submits lesson plans, attendance records, and statistical and program reports on time
  • Maintains program resources (e.g., computers, overhead projectors, TV/CD players, tape recorders, instructional materials, and books) in good condition

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Teaching, Adult Education, or Social Science
  • TESL Ontario Certificate and current Member of TESL Ontario
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in teaching English as a Second Language
  • Experience teaching ELT courses for internationally trained professionals in the IT, Finance/ Accounting, and/or Office Administration, or work experience in at least one of these fields
  • Technology in the classroom experience required
  • Experience in the IT industry desirable

  • Understanding of anti-racism issues and community development principles
  • Good computer skills: MS office, Internet, and knowledge of on-line learning
  • Ability to collaborate and engage with internal and external stakeholders and partners
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent team skills
  • Proven administrative skills (eg. lesson plans, attendance records, monthly reports)

Employment Type: Part-Time, Bargaining Unit
Work Hours: 8 hours/week – Tues/Thurs: 6pm-8:30pm, Saturday: 9am-12pm
Salary: T3 - $40.75/hour
