University Settlement is committed to enhancing the quality of life of the people in the communities we serve through our many programs and services. With a full-time and part-time staff of approximately 150, University Settlement has developed programs to address the needs of more than 10,000 users annually through diverse areas such as settlement services, English language classes, employment counseling, senior services, youth programming, homeless programs, music and arts education, and daycare. In addition, our main site hosts a full recreation centre with pool, gym and nautilus facilities.

JOB FUNCTION: To provide high-level language training to Clients.


• Valid TESL Ontario / OCELT certificate from TESL Ontario.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience teaching English as a Second Language to adult newcomers. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in teaching CLB 5/6.
• In depth understanding of and experience using the Revised Canadian Language Benchmarks 2012 and the LINC Curriculum Guidelines..
• Proficient in the application of Zoom, MS Teams, MS Office Programs and online resources in delivery.
• Proficiency in integrating digital technology in instruction including Learning Management System, video conferencing platforms, digital equipment applications in the classroom such as Chromebooks, digital whiteboard and remote learners’ immersion tools such as the Meeting Owl a strong asset.
• Completion of PBLA (Portfolio Based Language Assessment) and Stage 2 training.
• Ability to adapt teaching methodology to the needs/skill levels of individual learners.
• Excellent English communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience working in a multicultural environment.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of adult immigrants and refugees.
• Ability to work independently with excellent organizational and time management skills.

• Plan, design and teach English as a Second language classes in a LINC program based on the PBLA (Portfolio Based Language Assessment) guidelines.
• Develop PBLA based module plans and daily lessons based on the LINC Curriculum Guidelines.
• Design assessment tasks for ongoing evaluation of learners’ progress using the Canadian Language Benchmark's and PBLA guidelines.
• Support learner in organizing and updating the PBLA Language Companions;
• Prepare learners’ progress reports and conduct one to one interview with learners.
• Be able to inform learners of community resources, social services, and government resources.
• Arrange for guest speakers and class trips in consultation with Department Coordinator.
• Tact and discretion required to deal with or to settle requests or complaints.

• Submit lesson plans to Department Coordinator
• Submit accurately completed registers and monthly narratives to the Department Coordinator at the end of each month.
• Stay up to date using
• Attend staff meetings throughout the year and participate in program events such as the Annual Year End Celebration.
• Commitment to work effectively as a team with other instructors regarding programming and special events.
• Must notify the Department Director of any planned/emergency absences and must find a supply teacher for your class from the approved list of supply teachers.
• Ensure the safety of adult learners on field trips and report any arising needs and concerns directly to Department Director

• Attend Professional Development workshops and in-service training when opportunities arise.
• Other duties as assigned by Department Director
