University Settlement is a multi-service agency that was founded in 1910 and has the distinction of being the first community-based social service centre in the City of Toronto. Our four offices are part of culturally rich and vibrant neighborhoods in downtown Toronto and North York.

Reports to: Department Director


Class Room Responsibilities:

  • Plan and teach selected units from the LINC curriculum based on learner’s levels
  • Develop lessons and be sensitive to meet the needs of all the students
  • Facilitate adult’s learning of English as a Second Language using methods which foster independence in a learner-centered, communicative environment
  • Accountable for progressing learners to appropriate levels by using the CLB checklist
  • Be able to inform learners of community resources, social services and government resources
  • Tact and discretion required to deal with or to settle requests or complaints

Department Responsibilities:

  • Prepare a lesson plan for the day/days of teaching
  • Commitment to work effectively as a team with other instructors regarding programming and special events
  • Report to work at least 15 minutes prior to starting of the class
  • Be prepared to carry out the duties of day/days assigned to the regular instructor
  • Notify the office if/when can not report on time
  • Ensure the safety of adult learners on field trips and report any arising needs and concerns directly to Department Director

Oother Responsibilities:

  • Other duties as assigned by Department Director


  • Post-secondary Degree from an accredited institution, or a College Diploma in English, Education or related field. TESL certificate preferred
  • At least 2 years teaching experience in a Canadian context
  • Able to deliver language teaching in a native speaking context
  • Able to teach a multi-level LINC class
  • Having experience in teaching intermediate to high level LINC class is an asset
  • Familiar with LINC curriculum guidelines and CLB a must
  • Computer skills an asset (Microsoft Word, Internet, Ellis, etc.)
  • Experience working with multi-culturally diverse learners with various language abilities
  • Familiarity with PBLA an asset

Please note: Police Reference Check, satisfactory to University Settlement is a requirement for this position.

Full time Non-Unionized position
(Monday to Friday 9:00 a.m. -2:45 p.m.)
Rate: $35.29/hour
