The SewIt program is an entrepreneurial/small business development program for women who are in receipt of Ontario Works, have experience with or interest in sewing and are interested in starting their own business. This program is delivered in partnership with Toronto Employment and Social Services.

As a member of the NEW Employment team, the Program Coordinator provides one to one case management including administering a range of assessment tools, organizing & facilitating entrepreneurial training workshops, works collaboratively with the sewing instructor to ensure the delivery of the Fashion Tutorial component of the program, and creates market opportunities to support women in developing their skills and knowledge to create business plans for eventual self-employment. The Program Coordinator will work collaboratively with the NEW’s Employment and Settlement teams as well as community partners to ensure clients receive wrap around services to support their life and work goals.

This Program Coordinator also ensures that the program is delivered within funder and agency guidelines, policies and mission of the organization and is accountable and responsible for specific projects outcomes.

Reporting to: Manager of Operations, Employment Programs


  • Conduct outreach & develop strong working relationships with Toronto Employment and Social Services staff and management to ensure consistent referrals
  • Conduct telephone screening with every client; conduct needs assessment to determine interest in self employment/small business skills, past sewing experience and skill level
  • Administer an online entrepreneurial self assessment tool to clarify skill sets needed
  • Administer the Personality Dimensions ® assessment to enhance self awareness around attributes and career pathways
  • Ensure the delivery of the Fashion tutorial: sewing instructions and specialised creative techniques
  • Coordinate and facilitate entrepreneurial/small business training workshops: business plans, cash flow, financing options, legal information and marketing, etc.
  • Deliver a range of social media platform training sessions
  • Provide access to a range of entrepreneurial/small business markets including pop up shops, online shop opportunities, and community development partnerships
  • Work collaboratively with the Employment Ontario team to provide employment support and placement opportunities, as appropriate
  • Provide post program support of up to 6 months, in collaboration with the Employment Ontario team, including but not limited to: job search skills, mock interviews, work placements
  • Ensure clients receive wrap around services through internal and external referrals
  • Maintain high level of customer service and creating a supportive atmosphere for vulnerable clients


  • A post secondary diploma in Career and Work Counseling, Community Social Services and/or 3 years of related experience
  • Experience with employment case management and a Level B –Standard Assessment certification
  • Experience in developing and implementing community programming
  • Experience working with emerging entrepreneurs and/or government funded self employment programs
  • Highly detail-oriented and experienced in maintaining efficient administration systems
  • Demonstrated commitment to an inclusive workplace & an anti-oppressive framework

This is a full time position starting September 11, 2017
