Dixon Hall Neighbourhood Services is a multi-service agency located in the heart of east downtown Toronto. For 91 years, we have been touching the lives of thousands of our community’s most vulnerable residents by providing a range of programs and services across every stage of life.

Reporting to the Director, Philanthropy & Communications, and working in collaboration with the Communications Manager and program staff from both the Seniors Services and Philanthropy departments, the Research & Communications Officer will support a nascent partnership between Dixon Hall and the McMaster Institute for Research in Aging (MIRA) while engaging with relevant work across the agency and supporting program-related research and communications for all departments. Communications work will include, but will not be limited to, funding proposals, grant applications, case(s) for support, impact reports, and research reports.


  • Develop communications plans and processes for MIRA reporting
  • Design and implement communication collateral to engage diverse stakeholders (government, major donors, foundations, and the private sector)
  • Create original communication material including program specific webpages, thematic reports, project impact reports, project updates, infographics, and videos
  • Collaboratively develop social media content to engage key audiences
  • Contribute to the presentation of research findings and recommendations to a variety of audiences, internal and external
  • Support/lead the development of thought leadership pieces and program-related events (including op-eds, long-form media and speakers’ series or virtual roundtables)
  • Conduct the full range of activities required to research, prepare, and write grant proposals for all potential funding sources including municipal, provincial, federal, corporate, public and private/family foundations
  • Assemble and submit material related to grant requests, including letters of inquiry, proposals, budgets, reports and presentations


  • Post secondary degree in a related field
  • 2 – 3 years of experience in communications, research, philanthropy, or a related field (i.e. an academic background would be considered)
  • Organizational and project management skills
  • Experience and knowledge of working in a community-based organization an asset
  • Experience in managing and conducting research and/or evaluation
  • Experience with community-based resources, quality improvement and evaluation
  • Experience and knowledge with one or more of Dixon Hall’s program areas considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to write engaging pieces suitable for op-eds, press releases, and other public forums
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and work with stakeholders from diverse sectors (public, private, non-profit, community-based organizations, resident associations, and community residents) and cultures
  • Strong skills in community based quantitative and qualitative research and evaluation methodologies, particularly with diverse ethno-cultural groups
  • Demonstrated facilitation and presentation skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a strong ability to exchange knowledge
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite of programs and willingness or capacity to learn others
  • Strong written and verbal English language skills; fluency in additional languages, relevant to the communities of service, will be considered an asset
  • Able to provide a “Clear” or satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check as determined by the operational requirements of the program
  • MUST be qualified to work in Canada legally for the Employer
