Catholic Crosscultural Services - CCS is a settlement agency providing a wide range of services to immigrants and refugees regardless of race, religion or status. CCS is seeking a Settlement Counsellor, Crisis support. The scope of the role includes but not limited to providing effective crisis intervention and stabilization of individuals experiencing a mental health crisis, responding to referrals from newcomer Settlement staff and providing timely crisis assessment, intervention, and assistance in accessing or referring to internal or external community resources.


  • Provide individual short-term supportive counselling for newcomers (through identifying the problem presented, goals and available options)
  • Provide mental health assessment and evidence-informed crisis intervention to newcomers and their families who are in emotional distress
  • Provide crisis intervention for emergency situations
  • Provide case management by coordinating with the appropriate additional supports and services needed to ensure optimum care within the boundaries of confidentiality and disclosure
  • Assist individuals in developing and implementing effective crisis management strategies
  • Liaise with community support and partners (i.e. mental health service providers and Settlement Workers) for client’s recovery and integration into the society, work with families, crisis intervention/prevention, referrals to other services, etc.
  • Make appropriate referrals to longer-term community support services and/or mental health services as required
  • Plan, organize and facilitate group activities and orientation sessions on mental health-related topics
  • Conduct outreach activities in newcomer communities to increase awareness of the service and raise awareness of mental health
  • Form strong collaborations with mental health and social service agencies to facilitate effective delivery of crisis support services in the community
  • Participate in team meetings and relevant internal/external committees for program needs and opportunities
  • Input data into a database, maintain program records and prepare monthly reports and progress reports as required
  • Other related duties as assigned


  • The minimum level of education preferred is post-secondary degree in Social Work, Social Sciences, or equivalent training in a related health discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience providing mental health/crisis support counselling with related background in newcomer mental health, refugees and trauma counselling
  • Membership is in good standing in the related Provincial regulatory association
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
  • Knowledge, understanding, and sensitivity to issues affecting immigrant and refugee communities
  • Demonstrated commitment to high standards of culturally responsive service delivery within an anti-racism and anti-oppression framework
  • Demonstrate high degree of initiative, judgment and problem-solving ability
  • Demonstrate ability in using discretion when dealing with highly sensitive and confidential issues
  • Knowledge of community resources and services relating to mental health services
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills. Fluency in a second language is an asset
  • Proficiency in planning, implementing and evaluating group activities
  • Good organizational skills and ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • A clear Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check is mandatory

Hours: 35 hrs/week; occasional evenings and weekends as required
Salary: $62,000 - $64,000 annual salary plus benefits (after completion of the required probationary period)
