Somali Immigrant Aid Organization is a settlement agency providing a wide range of services to immigrants and refugees regardless of race, religion or immigration status. SIAO is seeking a full-time (35 hours/week) Two Settlement Workers to provide settlement information and referral services in Toronto to immigrants.


  • Provide settlement, orientation, information and referral services at both on-site and off-site locations
  • Using a client centred approach, conduct an assessment and assist newcomers in the development of a personalized settlement action plan
  • Thorough case management and follow-up contacts, support the achievement of positive client outcomes
  • Develop, document and report on client outcomes
  • Plan, implement and evaluate group sessions on topics relevant to client settlement needs
  • Track all client service activities and ensure data is entered into agency data base and funder reporting systems as required
  • Facilitate appropriate referrals and client access to other services in the community
  • Conduct community outreach to promote SIAO programs and services
  • Participate in regular program, team and regional meetings, as well as other internal and external committees as required
  • Prepare and submit statistical and progress reports to supervisor on a regular and ad hoc basis as required


  • Settlement Counselling diploma or equivalent training in the human services field
  • Minimum of 2 years’ work experience in the settlement and/or community work sectors
  • Understanding of, and sensitivity to, issues affecting immigrant and refugee communities
  • Demonstrated crosscultural communication skills with participants, other agencies and the public
  • Knowledge of community resources and services in Toronto
  • Interview, assessment, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively with other service providers
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting
  • Ability to work productively in an MS Office environment
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills; fluency in a second language is an asset
  • Good organizational skills, ability to multi-task while maintaining a high level of accuracy in data collection and reporting
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends
  • A clear Police Reference Check is mandatory

Hours: 35 hours per week, including evenings and weekends hours
