Immigrant Services – Guelph Wellington is a registered charitable organization with a mission to provide responsive and diverse settlement programs and services to assist new Canadians integrate into the social, economic and organizational life of the community.
Purpose of Position:
As part of a multidisciplinary team, the School Settlement Worker will facilitate the school orientation and settlement experience of students and their families by providing assistance and information to ensure that newcomer families are aware of and enabled to access the full array of community and school resources available to them.
- Provide systematic settlement needs assessment and action planning for newcomer youth and families
- Link newcomer families to resources and services in school and the community
- Provide needs based information
- Orient school staff about the settlement needs of newcomers
- Assist school staff with establishing and maintaining contact with hard to reach families
- Organize and facilitate settlement-related events and workshops
- Encourage parent participation in education
- Enable newcomer families to advocate for the educational needs of their children
- Promote services at school events
- Meet regularly with school stakeholders to strengthen partnerships
- Develop working relationships and engage other community organizations/partners
- Post-secondary training in the following areas: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Settlement Studies or Education
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- A willingness to learn new technologies is essential
- Excellent time management, attention to detail, and ability to effectively manage multiple tasks
- One year related experience preferably in a community agency environment
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals and cultures, school staff, students, families and community agencies
- Familiarity with settlement issues, immigration policies and the process of family needs assessments
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team with minimal supervision
- Knowledge of educational setting is an asset
- Knowledge of community resources that promote integration of newcomers.
- Experience facilitating groups, especially youth
- Proficient with Windows-based computer systems, in particular, email and MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
- Ability to speak another language is an asset
- Mobility resources – valid driver’s license and vehicle required
The applicant must be bondable and cleared by police reference check. Duties involve regular meetings with staff, clients, and community organizations. Travel is required. Duties can create stress due to pressure to meet deadlines in preparing and submitting detailed reports, and some necessary evening hours of work.
This is a contract for 35 hours a week until March 31st, 2021 with the possibility of extension based on funding.
