About Us

The Afghan Women’s Organization is a settlement agency providing a wide range of services to immigrants and refugee newcomers. Our mission is to improve newcomers' quality of life and to promote their social and economic inclusion in order to enable them to become contributing members of society and to live in dignity.


  • Conducts needs assessment; provides orientation and settlement services to youth clients
  • Recruits youth to participate in youth homework club and youth drop-in sessions
  • Conducts outreach, recruits youth and organizes group activities including homework club, recreational activities, youth leadership and civic engagement
  • Provides information sessions and referrals to community services including educational institutions, recreational programs, youth specific services, volunteer programs and employment opportunities
  • Liaises with community agencies in the areas where newcomer youth are living to bridge services to the needs of this population
  • Accompanies clients to appointments such as community and government services
  • Provides translation and interpretation services to clients to facilitate their access to community services
  • Maintains client files, records, statistics, and all required documentation
  • Documents needs and gaps in services for newcomers; makes recommendations to enhance the program and to ensure a client-centered model of delivery
  • Prepares funders’ reports
  • Evaluates the program on an on-going basis and recommends service delivery changes based on the evaluation
  • Other tasks as assigned


  • Fluent in oral and written Arabic and English. Another language, such as Kurdish is an asset
  • Demonstrates understanding of and experience working with refugees with multiple barriers
  • Knowledge of and experience working with other service providers serving newcomers
  • Ability to and experience with facilitating group sessions
  • Understanding of case management and report writing skills
  • Post-secondary education in Social Work or two-years work experience with refugees and newcomers
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
  • Ability to work flexible hours, evenings and occasionally on weekends.
