Introducing TESL Ontario Competency-and-Credit Based PLAR (CCPLAR)

TESL Ontario is pleased to announce that its new Competency-and-Credit Based PLAR (CCPLAR) service is now available to all eligible candidates who are interested in TESL Ontario OCELT & ICTEAL certification and professional designations.

  • OCELT (Ontario Certified English Language Teacher) recognizes that a certificate holder has the knowledge and skills required for teaching English to adult learners in all publicly funded and private programs in Ontario, other Canadian provinces and territories, and abroad.

  • ICTEAL (International Certificate in Teaching English as an Additional Language) recognizes that a certificate holder has the knowledge and skills required for teaching English as an Additional Language in international settings.

CCPLAR is for ESL/EFL professionals who have not completed a TESL Ontario-accredited training program.

The CCPLAR path could be an option for candidates who have a TESL-related diploma or degree from a program that is not accredited by TESL Ontario or 2,000 hours of recent adult English language teaching experience. CCPLAR takes into account eligible candidates’ TESL credentials, teaching experience, and competencies.

The CCPLAR application process consists of two stages:

  • Stage I - candidates apply to confirm their eligibility,
  • Stage II - eligible candidates meet competency requirements through one of two application streams:
  • Stream A - for those who have a TESL-related diploma or degree;
  • Stream B - for those who have accumulated at least 2,000 hours of recent adult English language teaching experience.

Eligible candidates are required to meet competency requirements in one to

four competency areas:

  • Canadian Adult ESL Contexts,
  • Educational Technology,
  • Adult Second Language Acquisition Theory,
  • Culture and Diversity.

Required competencies can be met through completing additional TESL training, doing a practicum course, providing evidence of teaching experience, and/or participating in a structured interview.
