Canada has announced rules for holders of expired post-graduation work permits who want to apply for open work permits or extend the one they currently have.
International students whose permits expired or will expire between September 20th, 2021 and December 31, 2022 will be able to avail the new extension.
"Today, we’re launching extensions of expired or expiring post-graduation work permits from September 20, 2021, to December 31, 2022. This includes auto-renewals for some and interim work authorizations for all, so that individuals can get back to work sooner," Canadian Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said on Twitter.
These students will receive an additional open work permit of 18 months.
Announced in April, the relaxation is aimed to give students who were stuck during the pandemic a second chance to remain in the country and work full-time.
"Canada remains a top destination for global talent. We’ll continue attract and welcome the best and the brightest from around the world," Fraser added.
International students who have graduated from designated Canadian institutions can apply for post-graduation work permits in order to be eligible to remain in the country and work.
Those currently in Canada will also have the ability to work in the interim period while their permit is being extended or a new one is being issued.
