Close to 88% of Indigenous people in Ontario live in cities. And the contributions they make to urban life are often overlooked, misunderstood, or dismissed.
This webinar challenges assumptions and invites deeper understanding of Indigenous people living in urban areas. It aims to:
- Break down myths about urban Indigenous communities and explore the rich diversity and strength within these communities.
- Highlight the value of Indigenous knowledge, practices, and relationships, and how these continue to shape and support life in cities across Turtle Island (North America).
- Offer guidance on how to foster respectful, reciprocal relationships with urban Indigenous communities, focusing on the role Friendship Centres play in providing connection, support, and self-determination.
Discuss ways to support Indigenous self-determination. - Introduce the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act and examine how it can offer a practical framework for fostering meaningful solidarity with urban Indigenous communities.
Speakers:
- Heléna Mauti, Instructor, Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres
- Falisha Nazarali, Instructor, Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres
