
We know that many newcomer clients experienced trauma during the migration journey; and for many, although the experience of trauma may be behind them, its effects may continue to impact integration, engagement and navigation of systems and services.
This webinar will look at the importance of working with newcomer clients using a trauma informed approach. Core Trauma Informed principles and practices will be reviewed, with a focus on how to move from ‘theory to practice’ so that you feel competent and confident in offering supports and services with a trauma informed approach.

About the presenter:
Laura Callaghan (RN, MN, NP)
Laura is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with the Mental Health and Addictions Program at the Izaak Walton Killam (IWK) Hospital in Nova Scotia. Laura’s current clinical focus is on newcomer mental health, collaborating in community partnerships such as the Newcomer Health Clinic, ISANS (settlement) to see, assess, and provide care to newcomer children, youth and families experiencing mental health concerns or distress.
She is a member of IWK’s Trauma Informed Care Committee and served on the advisory board of the National Newcomer Navigation (N4) Network. Laura has completed training in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; Narrative Exposure Therapy and in 2021 completed a Certificate in Social and Contemporary Social Issues: Immigration and Integration through St. Paul University in Ottawa. She also holds a graduate diploma in Theology from Tyndale Seminary.
