Job Title: Settlement Worker in School (SWIS)
Language Requirement: required (English + French + Arabic, Spanish Mandarin)
Hours: 35 hours/week
Compensation: $32.80 per hour
Start Date: As soon as possible – contract ends March 31, 2027

Newcomer Centre of Peel (NCP) is a nonprofit, charitable, multi-service agency that assists the entire newcomer family in achieving settlement and integration. With experience and expertise in English language training, employability, and comprehensive settlement services — including programs for women, children, youth, and seniors — NCP offers a dedication to service quality. Through innovation and a progressive attitude, we leverage the broad experience of our staff and community partners to overcome settlement barriers.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct outreach to newcomer families and youth to provide settlement services in schools.
- Conduct needs assessments to identify immediate, intermediate, and long-term settlement needs.
- Provide newcomer families and youth with settlement information and referrals to community services and educational resources based on their specific needs.
- Facilitate information and orientation sessions to help newcomer families understand the school system, Canadian society, culture, laws, and other aspects of life in Canada.
- Support newcomer families in navigating the Ontario education system, including school policies, procedures, and programs, and encourage active participation in school and community life.
- Provide information to school staff regarding the cultural sensitivities and unique needs of newcomer families.
- Maintain up-to-date client and service records, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality of client information.
- Submit statistical and service reports to the SWIS Program Manager as required.
- Stay current with changes in policies, legislation, and community resources affecting newcomers.
- Participate in professional development activities, workshops, conferences, and training sessions to support continuous learning and program excellence.
- Attend meetings as required.
- Carry out other duties as determined by the SWIS Program Manager.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Post-secondary education in social work, psychology, settlement, or a related field.
- Minimum one year of experience assisting newcomers with settlement issues.
- Extensive knowledge of the immigration system, Ontario school system, and community resources.
- Current knowledge of legislation, policies, and practices affecting newcomers.
- Strong workshop facilitation, presentation, and public speaking skills.
- Demonstrated cross-cultural communication skills with intercultural sensitivity when working with newcomer youth, parents, and school staff.
- Knowledge of issues related to immigrant and refugee communities.
- Strong organizational and self-management skills.
- Ability to multi-task while maintaining a high degree of accuracy in case management and data collection.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in computer applications and social media platforms.
- Valid Ontario driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Must be proficient in English and French, as well as one additional language -Spanish, Mandarin, or Arabic.
