RATE OF PAY:$ 28 per hour

Job Summary

Reporting to the Program Coordinator/ Manager, the Settlement Worker in School is responsible for identifying the client's settlement and/or educational needs, assets (skills, abilities, life experiences) and settlement/educational objectives. The incumbent creates and provides a Settlement Plan with realistic timelines and specific actions to be taken with estimated start and completion dates 

Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Identify the client's settlement and/or educational needs, assets (skills, abilities, life experiences) and settlement/educational objectives
  • Implement steps and actions to achieve each objective
  • Provide resources and services, including referrals to internal and external services
  • Refer client to provincial and territorial government supports, organizations, providing specialized services and other relevant information
  • Create and provide a Settlement Plan with realistic timelines and specific actions to be taken, with estimated start and completion dates
  • Identify common trends and needs within the school’s newcomer community to provide recommendation to the staff on how to better meet those needs and to enhance program planning and provide evidence of program impact.
  • Record and submit monthly reports on time
  • Complete and submit timesheets, program expenses/receipts, and other administrative forms on a timely basis
  • Enter and maintain client information into the database system CRM
  • Inform supervisor of whereabouts as requested
  • Attend internal/external staff meetings and staff training as required.
  • Provide appropriate referrals both internally and externally
  • Ensure up to date information and referral is provided
  • Ensure effective referral with follow-up and outcomes
  • Facilitate/conduct group information sessions for newcomers on community services and school related topics
  • Conversation Circles will be conducted to build up newcomers’ confidence, improving their pronunciation and vocabulary, and learning life skills
  • Attend and support at Parent-teacher interviews, kindergarten registration, open houses, school councils, and other school programming.
  • Communicate with school staff at all levels (teachers and/or principals)
  • Support School Board initiatives including focus groups, parent literacy conferences, and immunization screening
  • Conduct WOW/iFUN Orientation in conjunction with ESL Teachers, Guidance Counselors, Principals, and other SWIS.
  • Create/Facilitate Welcome Clubs/Ethnicity Groups, to provide a sense of belonging for newcomer youth.

Qualifications Required

Required: 

  • Completion of post-secondary education: diploma or degree in Social Work or a related field or a combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience in settlement work or community work
  • Fluency in Arabic, Dari, and Pashto is required. Knowledge of additional languages is considered an asset.
  • Experience in a school environment is an asset
  • Effective interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Effective English language communication skills both oral and written
  • Ability to work with school personnel in meeting the needs of newcomer students and their families
  • Good organizational skills, ability to multi-task while maintaining a high level of accuracy in data collection
  • Strong computer skills in Windows, MS Word, Email, and the Internet
  • Mandatory police check - completed within the last six months
  • Driver’s license and access to a vehicle (an asset)
