Fixed Student Contribution Simplifies Canada Student Loan Eligibility

The Government plans to introduce a fixed student contribution to determine eligibility for financial assistance through the Canada Student Loans Program, part of its commitment to strengthen the middle class, and help those working hard to join it.

Beginning in 2017, students will only be expected to provide a fixed contribution of between $1,500 and $3,000 per academic year (based on their family income and family size).

Service for Reporting Abuse and Neglect of Adults with Developmental Disabilities

The Government of Ontario is expanding ReportON, a new service for reporting suspected or witnessed abuse of adults with developmental disabilities.

The 24/7phone line and email service is the latest step taken by the Ministry of Community and Social Services to further improve the safety of adults with developmental disabilities.

Prime Minister Announces Special Advisor on LGBTQ2 Issues

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has announced that Randy Boissonnault, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, has been named Special Advisor on LGBTQ2 issues.

Mr. Boissonnault’s principal role will be to advise the Prime Minister on the development and co-ordination of the Government of Canada’s LGBTQ2 agenda. This will include working with LGBTQ2 organizations from across the country to promote equality for the LGBTQ2 community, protect the rights of its members, and address discrimination against them – both historical and current.

Advisor Appointed to Review Use of Segregation in the Province’s Corrections System

Ontario has appointed an independent advisor on corrections reform to provide advice to the government on the use of segregation and ways to improve the province's adult corrections system.

Howard Sapers, who has most recently served as the Correctional Investigator of Canada and Ombudsman for offenders sentenced in federal correctional institutions, will review the use of all forms of segregation in Ontario's corrections facilities, and will identify opportunities for longer-term corrections transformation.
