Summary
The event will inform and empower community members and service providers invested in supporting youth lured by hate on online gaming sites. Gaming provides community, but it also provides opportunities for promoting negative ideologies such as misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia, and racism. Gaming sites act as a point of connection where youth can share grievances they may have. Existing research is at a nascent stage, but there is a growing global concern about the increasing intersection between gaming and extremism.
PRESENTATIONS
Hazel Woodrow, Canadian Anti-Hate Network, will present on “Confronting and Preventing Hate Movement Recruitment in Online Gaming” based on Canadian Anti-Hate Network’s flagship workshop, “Confronting and Preventing Hate in Canadian Schools”. This presentation will empower community members and service providers who are invested in supporting youth who are harmed by hate — both as perpetrators and as victims. The presentation will help participants understand the role of online gaming in hate movement recruitment.
Eden Dales, Eden Dales Social Work (EDSW), will present “Trauma-Informed Recovery and Reintegration” based on understanding that traumatic experiences terrify and overwhelm the individual, often leading to poor choices and risky behaviour. Trauma-informed intervention restores a sense of safety, power, and self-worth. This presentation will discuss strategies for recovery and reintegration focusing on self-reflection, and recognizing the difference between narrative and fact.
