Working with Rohingya Newcomers: Global Displacement, Local Practice

This workshop brings together research and practice on supporting Rohingya refugees on their journey from refugee camps to settlement and integration in Canada. The presentations include a discussion of pre-arrival experiences and the challenges of prolonged displacement, early settlement experiences in Canada, the settlement needs and priorities identified by Rohingya newcomers, and how partnerships with non-settlement organizations are essential to ensure community support for successful long-term integration. Lessons learned include the importance of understanding how pre-arrival experiences shape settlement and integration in Canada; the continuity of refugee experiences across borders; the importance of collaboration among researchers, service providers, and communities; and how work with Rohingya newcomers can inform support for other refugee groups arriving in Canada now and in the future.
