About this Course

This online self-directed course aims to help front-line practitioners working with immigrant and refugee communities to better understand issues of gender-based violence (GBV) and develop a supportive response for survivors with intersectional identities. After completing this course, you will be able to: 

  • Explain the importance of using anti-racism, anti-oppression, and anti-intersectional frameworks when supporting immigrants and refugees.
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of violence specific to immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Identify and practice applying strategies for responding to disclosures of violence, taking into account the intersectional needs of diverse immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Name specific ways that frontline workers can support immigrant and refugee survivors of GBV at the individual and systemic levels, as well as through community engagement. 

    Criteria for Participation

  • This course is open to settlement workers and service providers who are working in or with the immigrant and refugee-serving sector across the Ontario, and who are willing to:
  • Commit to approximately 2-4 hours of learning per week
  • Engage in a weekly discussion forum. 
  • At the successful completion of the course, you will receive a certification of completion from OCASI.
