About DBNC

Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre (DBNC) is a nonprofit organization. Was founded in 1988 by concerned members of the community to enhance the quality of life of those residing in the Dixie Bloor area. For over 35 years, DBNC has been an institution in the Peel region for our timely and responsive service delivery for newcomers, families, youth, children, seniors, and job seekers. All our programs are free of charge and strive to meet the needs of the community. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life with impactful services and engaging programs that build stronger and progressive communities.

Position Summary

Are you passionate about the stewardship of caring and vibrant community focused organization where programs offers are accessible, responsive and at no cost? Are you committed to making positive impact on the lives of vulnerable individuals and families in Canada? Do you have experience supporting nonprofit charitable organizations with their private fundraising and board governance?

In 2022, we launched a new three-year strategy that focuses on Building stronger communities and strengthening the organization. To support this impact, we increased our private fundraising ambitions. By joining our volunteer Board of Directors, you will play a vital role in shaping the direction of our organization and advancing our strategy to create a brighter future for the individuals we serve. You will have the opportunity to work alongside a passionate and dedicated team, sharing your skills. Knowledge and experience to help guide our organization and drive our impact forward. You will also play a key developing role in developing strategic vision. Overseeing our governance and building relationships with donors and partners to help us achieve our goals.

We are particularly interested in candidates with background and experience that encompasses fundraising, public relations, marketing, and/or donor stakeholder engagement.

Board Member Responsibilities

  • Provide governance and oversight to DBNC as a non-profit organization.
  • Participating in an informed manner at Board, committee, and annual general meetings;
  • Periodically representing DBNC at events or in meetings with external and internal constituency group
  • Chair or sit on committees of the Board as required
  • Collaborate with staff and volunteers to enhance organizational capacity
  • Serve on at least one committee aligned with your expertise
  • Act as an ambassador for DBNC, representing the organization at events and initiatives
  • Board members should expect 9 board meetings per of 2-3 hours plus the associated prep time (1-2 hours per meeting) and the annual general meeting (AGM) Board members can expect to contribute 36-48 hours per year (equivalent to 3-4 hours per month)
  • A board member commits to serve a three-year term
  • Actively support DBNC through time and talent such as engaging and participating in fundraising events activities, making financial contributions, identifying new prospective partners and donors, volunteering time outside of board meetings to participate in donor communications
  • Contribute to fundraising strategy including long-term plans and targets

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience in fundraising and/or finance is strongly preferred.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in governance and decision-making.
  • Previous Board experience is an asset.

Interviews will be scheduled with shortlisted candidates and the Board recruitment committee. Interview time will be based on the availability of those involved. Each interview will be expected to take up to 45 minutes.
