This is a Full-Time Unionized positionfor 25 hours per week providing in-person instruction at CLB 4 + Citizenship Preparation, Monday to Friday: 9.00 a.m. to 2:30 pm
The above-listed class is closed for 8 weeks: July 1 to August 31 for Summer Break, from December 22 to January 2 for Christmas Winter Break, and 1 week from March 16 to March 20 for March Break.
DUTIES
- Develop and deliver lessons that align with LINC curriculum and meet the needs of adult newcomers to Canada.
- Incorporate both English for daily use as well as Citizenship preparation content and relevant activities in short-term and long-term lesson delivery planning.
- Design PBLA-based module plans, as well as daily lesson plans following the latest Canadian Language Benchmarks and LINC Curriculum Guidelines, as well as Discover Canada.
- Develop a diversity of course materials that are based on the LINC Curriculum and PBLA Practice Guidelines in a task-based program for everyday English use and Citizenship test/ interview preparation.
- Create engaging lesson plans for in-person delivery, with flexibility of adaptation to online or hyflex (concurrent groups in-person and remote learners) when the need arises.
- Incorporate Avenue.ca and a range of interactive digital resources and activities such as ELLII, CanAvenue, Kahoot, Padlet, and more. Provide support to learners in accessing these digital learning resources.
- Incorporate diverse engaging activities, such as games, mock voting for an election, access to government services information including citizenship requirements and application process, news discussion and reports, role plays, field trips and more.
- Design and conduct practice exercises, mini-Citizenship tests and mock Citizenship interviews incorporated in module plans continuously in a spiral approach.
- Conduct needs assessments with learners, assist them to set learning goals, and develop lessons accordingly as required.
- Design assessment tasks for on-going evaluation of learners’ progress based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks, PBLA guidelines, Discover Canada and Citizenship Test Requirements.
- Document and monitor learners’ progress. Prepare Learners’ Progress Reports.
- Provide learners orientation on PBLA requirements and assist learners in organizing and updating the PBLA Language Companions (learner portfolios) as evidence of their learning progress.
- Provide synchronous and asynchronous online instruction using virtual conferencing tools,e.g., MS Teams, and BBB on Avenue.ca when needed.
- Create a non-threatening and positive learning environment by acknowledging and respecting students’ existing skills and life experiences.
- Maintain attendance records and other documentation as required.
- Organize, collaborate and participate in special events to enhance learners’ participation and cultural experience.
- Participate in professional development as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- TESL certificate from an accredited institution recognized by TESL Ontario.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience teaching English as a Second Language to adult newcomers.
- Experience in teaching Citizenship Preparation content based on Discover Canada and Citizenship Interview practice to lower intermediate learners.
- Experience providing online training through a Moodle-based Learning Management System.
- Experience providing adult instruction using virtual delivery tools and software (e.g. MS Teams, Google Classroom, ELLII, Avenue.ca, Kahoot, etc.).
- Experience delivering language instruction in a hyflex model (concurrent groups of in-person and remote learners) will be an asset.
- In-depth understanding of and experience using the latest Revised Canadian Language Benchmarks, the LINC Curriculum Guidelines, the PBLA Practice Guidelines, and Discover Canada.
- *Preference will be given to candidates who have completed PBLA (Portfolio Based Language Assessment) and Avenue.ca Stage 2 training.
- Preference will be given to candidates who have experience teaching CLB 4 with focus on Citizenship preparation.
- Proficient in using MS programs, email and internet for communication and instruction.
- Ability to adapt teaching methodology to the needs/skill levels of individual learners.
- Excellent English communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience working in a multicultural environment.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of seniors would be an asset
- Ability to work independently with excellent organizational and time management skills.
*Note: Successful incumbent must complete online PBLA and Avenue.ca Stage 2 training within 3 months when training becomes available.
DURATION: January 01, 2026, to March 31, 2027,
SALARY RANGE: $41.37 per hour
