Position Title: Logistics Worker – Asylum Claimant Response (PACR)

Organization Structure: Reports to the Program Coordinator

Job Status: Part-time Month-to-Month Contract (3 months minimum anticipated)

Location: Peel Region

Wage: $27.47/hour for 16 hours/week

Hours: Saturday-Sunday 3:00pm – 11:30pm

 

This is NOT a bargaining unit position.

Scope

The Logistics Worker is responsible for supporting the temporary stay of asylum claimants at the assigned facility (hotel). The Logistics Worker ensures the safety and wellbeing of clients by conducting orientation, intake, supplying hygiene items, food, conducting regular check-ins, keeping accurate record, and reporting to the Region of Peel and Polycultural management. The staff member is expected to work co-operatively with others in the community; demonstrate flexibility in organizing work; show a high degree of initiative and resourcefulness; must have excellent communication skills; and demonstrate thoughtfulness in decision-making.

 

Responsibilities

  • Conduct all intake, discharge, and case plan/case notes as appropriate in Region of Peels’ Housing Technology System (HTI)
  • Provide client orientation inclusive of a tour to the hotel and facilities, resident handbook-rights and responsibilities, discharge planning, review intake information for HTI, and signing consents
  • Work with clients to determine their immediate needs/concerns as part of the intake process, this is to include: health, food retention, food allergies, harm reduction needs, and safety considerations
  • Coordinate the transfer of each client from respite facility to a community or shelter system across Ontario
  • Keep a record and notify appropriate parties in case of client being discharged or transferred to another facility
  • Must forward the Occupancy Report with aggregate numbers to designated Region’s staff daily by the established deadline
  • Support clients in the process of applying online to be connected to a Region of Peel Housing Support Worker
  • Respond to general inquiries to support clients in their housing search
  • Ensure all belongings are disinfected at the intake
  • Train on the use of everyday appliances and amenities
  • Coordinate laundry services, ensure a sufficient supply of bedding for each client
  • Distribute bedding to clients
  • Distribute hygiene and grooming items and prepare purchase orders when required
  • Report any dietary restrictions
  • Work with the supplier to provide breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks
  • Distribute food to clients in hotel designated area
  • If a client is not present, the food item must be kept in the staff’s station adhering to food handling and storage requirements-pending distribution to clients that require it in future
  • Must conduct at least two (2) bed checks during the shift. One (1) must be conducted at the beginning of each shift, and one (1) must be conducted at the end of each shift.
  • Inform the Program Coordinator in case:
  1. There has been a damage to the facility property while a client has been occupying a room
  2. There has been an incident between facility staff and a client
  3. A client has violated the facility policy
  4. A unit that the client is residing in is in a poor state and would require extensive cleaning
  5. If a client has been issued a letter of discharge
  6. If police have been contacted by the facility staff
  • Conduct thorough premises inspections on a daily basis and complete a room inspection list
  • Effectively track activities and provide accurate reporting to Program Coordinator
  • Achieve targets set by Program Coordinator
  • Actively participate in professional development initiatives
  • Perform other duties assigned

Qualifications

  • A degree or diploma in Community or Social Work, Counselling, or Education and two years of experience working with immigrant communities or a combination of experience and education that fulfils the requirements
  • Knowledge of temporary housing, settlement, and housing-related services and resources in the GTA
  • Familiarity with issues facing newcomers in Canadian urban setting
  • Excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural, conflict resolution, negotiation, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license is preferred, with access to a vehicle and a clean driving record
  • Preference will be given to those who speak French, Spanish, Portuguese, Amharic, Swahili, Urdu, Turkish, Dhari, Pashtu, or Farsi
  • Must be willing and able to work on flexible schedules as needed
  • Computer proficiency for regular data entry, communication, and presentation with colleagues and partner agencies

 

Other requirements

  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check (completed when an offer is made)
