Promising Practice: The Avenue-LearnIT2teach Project

Summary

The Avenue-LearnIT2teach Project was developed to modernize Canadian settlement language training, address the demand for flexible course delivery (blended and online), and align closely with Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA).

About the Program:

The project includes two key components: a Canada-specific learning management system (LMS), and a structured training program for instructors that is hosted on the platform. The LMS provides language training organizations serving newcomers with a virtual classroom environment, an extensive catalogue of pre-made, CLB-aligned language learning modules, and an electronic portfolio for the efficient collection, storage, and assessment of learner assignments. It is fully integrated with Tutela, IRCC’s national repository for settlement language resources, enabling seamless content sharing. Instructors can use Avenue content to create tailored courses adapted to their regional contexts and the needs of their learners. The structured training program teaches instructors how to effectively use the platform. Instructors’ professional development is further supported through a live help chat, webinars, blogs, podcasts, newsletters and a national teacher discussion forum.
