About this course

The online learning course Serving Youth in Newcomer Communities equips service providers, youth workers, and settlement sector workers who support young newcomers, immigrants, refugees, and migrants.

Through interactive modules, participants will explore:

  • the fundamental concepts of anti-oppression, systemic oppression, intersectionality, cultural humility and trauma-informed practices;
  • the importance of Indigenous solidarity, reflective practice, self-care and establishing healthy boundaries in working with youth;
  • the various migratory paths and statuses, as well as the stressors before, during and after migration that can shape the experiences of young people in Canada;
  • the realities and needs of young Francophones, 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, young people with disabilities, young people without status and young people living in rural areas;
  • strengths-based approaches, meaningful youth engagement, trust-building, advocacy and institutional change;
  • youth-focused services, including barriers to accessing housing, employment, education, health, mental health, leisure and rights;
  • the creation of accessible, inclusive programs co-created with young people, as well as strategies for liaison, peer support, funding and evaluation.

At the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to understand the complex experiences of young newcomers, to recognize the systemic barriers that influence their access to services, and to adapt their practices to strengthen the autonomy, participation and well-being of young people.

This course is intended for settlement sector workers, youth workers, community service providers, and anyone who works with young newcomers to Ontario.
