Webinar Objective:

This webinar will explore the challenges faced by individuals with precarious immigration status, including how status is lost, the rights of refugees and refugee claimants, and the realities of immigration detention. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the legal, systemic, and human impacts of precarious status, the asylum process, and the protections available for refugees.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will be better equipped to:

  • Recognize the complexities and risks associated with precarious status
  • Advocate for the rights and dignity of vulnerable individuals
  • Understand the third country safe agreement and the effect toward the asylum seekers
  • Contribute to building a more compassionate and just immigration system

Speakers:

  • Ana Ulloa (She/Her). Settlement Counsellor, Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture (CCVT). Ana is a bilingual settlement counsellor who supports Spanish-speaking refugee claimants and individuals with precarious immigration status. She uses a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive approach to help clients access housing, healthcare, and legal support. Ana holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and combines academic training with frontline experience. Passionate about cross-sector collaboration, she works to build responsive support systems for newcomers. Ana is deeply committed to equity, dignity, and compassionate service delivery, with a focus on centring the voices of displaced individuals and addressing systemic barriers to integration.
  • Annas Elhassan (He/Him). Settlement Counsellor, TNO - The Neighbourhood Organization. Annas is a multilingual settlement and resettlement professional with extensive experience supporting refugees and immigrants. Fluent in English, Arabic, Tigre, Bilen, and Tigrinya, he provides personalized support to newcomer students and helps foster inclusive, welcoming environments in schools. Annas has contributed his expertise to organizations such as Polycultural Immigrant and Community Services, Malton Neighbourhood Services, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
    He holds a credential in Interpretation from the American University in Cairo and has completed training in project management and various professional development courses. Annas is currently pursuing a diploma in Social Work at Humber College, further strengthening his commitment to community support and advocacy.
