Youth Engagement Program Coordinator

The Youth Engagement Coordinator supports and enhances Delta Family’s youth programs while building connections with community groups in Northwest Toronto. Reporting to the Manager, Child Youth and Family department, the role involves planning and delivering activities that reduce isolation, promote academic success, foster strong youth leadership, and connect young people with positive role models. The coordinator also helps youth develop their skills and cultural identity while strengthening the capacity of individuals and youth-led groups. This role plays a key part in envisioning and creating dynamic programs that engage, empower, and heal Black youth in local communities.
Responsibilities:
- Synthesize, strengthen, and support the implementation of Delta Family’s diverse youth and after-school programming, expanding initiatives beyond traditional models.
- Build a core group of youth leaders to guide and support youth-led activities
- Develop broader leadership and empowerment initiatives rooted in Black identity and pride (e.g., Black King/Queen circles)
- Coordinate programming and activities of the Delta Family’s youth centre “Youth Zone” cultivating it as a safe, empowering space for Black youth to connect, grow, and thrive.
- Plan and lead the delivery of a range of activities with youth and community groups in Toronto's northwest.
- Facilitate engagement through peer education, mobilization, and relationship-building.
- Conduct outreach, engagement, facilitation, training, and leadership development by meeting youth where they are—delivering programming in both traditional and non-traditional community settings.
- Ground all programming in youth development theory and strength-based practices that recognize the unique assets of Black youth
- Utilize social media and digital platforms to engage youth, promote programs, and encourage leadership development
- Incorporate creative and culturally resonant activities (e.g., spoken word, drumming, podcasting) to enhance youth participation and identity development
- Apply a community-centered, anti-oppression approach to all aspects of the work.
- Assist in developing and supporting community leaders from diverse demographic groups.
- Organize and lead educational, social support and advocacy groups for parents.
- Liaise with administrators, parents, service providers, and community stakeholders—especially at schools and youth-serving centres—to support and strengthen youth programming.
- Collaborate and work closely with various youth workers across all departments in Delta Family and promote Delta Family’s Youth Programs and activities.
- Partner with other facilitators to deliver culturally relevant programming for Black youth (including Rites of Passage process)
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Candidate must possess a Social Services, Child & Youth, Social Work or equivalent degree/ diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution or equivalent experience
- More than two years experience working with Black youth outside of a school context
- One year experience in working with Black families
- At least 2 years experience successfully engaging and supporting diverse Black youth aged 17 to 29 from low income, under-resourced communities
- Minimum 1 years' experience in coordinating and delivering services to youth and parents.
- Has lived experience of the issues faced by Toronto’s Black communities
- Experience in working in a dynamic youth centre or programs offering diverse programs for youth aged 13 – 29 is an asset
- Understanding of the impact of oppression and anti-Black racism and the barriers faced by Black youth and families.
- Experience in creating, nurturing and growing partnerships with new and existing community agency partners
- Awareness of the diversity of the African Canadian experience and issues faced by Black youth and families engaged in various systems.
- Demonstrated understanding of the intersectional identities of Black youth and the impact of various forms of oppression.
- Demonstrated advocacy skills and ability to encourage and support youth and parents; Familiarity with navigating the school system is an asset
- Excellent group facilitation and training skills.
- Strong writing and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Additional language is an asset
- The successful candidate will be required to have/obtain a current vulnerable sector Reference Check (can be obtained upon offer of position).
