Manager, Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO)
Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) often support newcomer students and families in ways that extend beyond settlement navigation and education system orientation. Their work may involve mediating student conflicts, supporting difficult conversations related to mental health or legal issues, interpreting for families and school staff, and responding to situations involving exclusion or suspension of newcomer youth.
Working within school environments, often away from their agencies and supervisors, SWIS staff can face unique challenges and role ambiguity.
This session will explore:
- The SWIS program within the IRCC Settlement Program framework
- Power dynamics in school settings and strategies for building trust and collaboration
- Communication skills for navigating complex situations in schools
- The balance between SWIS scope of work and role identity
