Scope of Position

Responsible for the delivery of all components of the case management services at the Asylum Claimant overflow facility. This will include the provision of centralized case management, service coordination, and coaching and regular follow-up to ensure that refugees are connected to and participate in local programs that address their needs.

Fluency in English and in either French, or Spanish, or Arabic is required for this role.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Intake and assess asylum claimants to determine their immediate needs
  • Provide system navigation and referrals for community supports including but not limited to health supports, community legal services, basic needs, immigration pathways (completing an asylum claim), income support, securing alternate accommodations, including shelters in other municipalities and IRCC accommodations
  • Support clients in their housing search by connecting with landlords, property managers, and real estate agents. Follow up with clients daily and update and record progress.
  • Guide clients through housing services and the housing screening tool in preparation for their meeting with the Housing Worker
  • Perform accurate and timely data entry, maintain up-to-date client records, and review existing client data daily to ensure the number of clients and families is current and accurate
  • Co-ordinate and liaise with Emergency Shelter Vendor, Newcomer Settlement Partner’s (NSPs), Income and Social Supports (Regional Ontario Works) staff, Region of Peel Housing Support Workers (HSWS), and other supports as needed
  • Manage bus tickets and payment for taxi fares for claimants for transfers to accommodations
  • Inform and support asylum claimants with transition to an Asylum Claimant Emergency Shelter or IRCC accommodations when a space becomes available
  • Utilize the Region’s designated SharePoint site to securely maintain and share drop-in centre asylum seeker data, transfer lists, and communication logs
  • Responsible for service planning to develop a settlement plan and identify the internal and external referrals needed to achieve set goals
  • Support clients in the decision-making process through information provision and supportive counselling
  • Responsible for regular follow-ups to check on progress, identify emerging needs, additional services needed, changes to the plan, and further linkages and referrals
  • Organize and facilitate information group sessions
  • Maintain strong working relations with agency programs and partner agencies
  • Effectively track services in internal and external databases and provide accurate reporting for supervisors
  • Achieve the targets set by Program Coordinator
  • Actively participate in the professional development initiatives
  • Perform other duties assigned

Qualifications

  • A degree or diploma in Social Work or Counselling, and at least two years experience working with immigrant communities or a combination of experience and education that fulfills the requirements
  • Registered Social Worker (RSW) is a definite asset
  • Knowledge of immigration and refugee services and of the ethno-specific programs and services in the GTA
  • Familiarity with issues facing newcomers in Canadian urban setting and systemic barrier facing integration in education, social, cultural, and economic aspects of Canadian life
  • Excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in outreach, community development, and marketing of programs and services
  • Fluency in English and in either French, or Spanish, or Arabic is required for this role.
  • Must be willing and able to work on flexible schedules as needed
  • Computer proficiency for regular data entry, communication, and presentation with colleagues and partner agencies

Other requirements

  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Police Check must be completed prior to commencing employment
